| Resumo | Fires cause tree mortality, emission of aerosols and trace gases to atmosphere, alter the radiation balance and reduce photosynthetic rates of vegetation. These emissions can interfere in the rainfall regime and affect the health of population. The aim of this work was to answer the following questions: (i) is there any temporal trends on fire behavior in the Amazon? (ii) where do these trends occur and what is the spatial extent of significant trends? (iii) what is the magnitude of these trends? For answering these questions, we used active fire detection data, aggregated at 729 km2 cell grid for analyzing the entire Brazilian Legal Amazon, during the years 2002-2014. We used two non-parametric statistical methods to analyze the regional and local trends, as well as quantify its magnitude (Mann-Kendall and Sens Slope, respectively). We found evidence of a significant tendency in regional reduction of fires between the years 2002-2014 (at 10% of significance; p-value = 0.077). Locally significant trends (p-value < 0.05) were observed in the reduction of fires, mostly in the Arc of Deforestation region; however, there was a significant (p-value < 0.05) increase in areas of deforestation frontiers, especially in Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) areas. The areas with negative trends are possibly related to the reduction in deforestation rates, whereas the areas with positive trend were associated with an increase of deforestation. |
